Musical fortune
I reflect that I am extremely fortunate in the fact that I can listen to my eighth-grader practicing his violin -- his third year of playing -- and find it not merely tolerable, but outright enjoyable.

What's he working on right now? Has he gotten to the Bach double concerto yet?

He's not working on any solo stuff -- we haven't gotten him into private lessons, though we probably should. It's the usual middle school orchestra miscellany.

Oh, that's excellent.

I've been out of instrumental music for 18 years so now that I'm practicing again, I cannot listen to *myself*. It's so brutal!

I'm pretty rusty myself... but fortunately(?) I'm too busy to pick up an instrument!

that is indeed remarkable! And without private lessons? He must be a natural.

Well, he's not a prodigy or anything, but he's got a good ear for an eighth-grader. And he's more diligent about practice than I ever was.
